After years of mutual admiration, the two of us finally met IRL when my book, Flawless, was coming out in 2023. I had known her product work at Vox Media and stanned Girls Night In (Downtime’s earlier iteration). She had followed my work while I was NPR bureau chief for the Koreas & Japan. I admire Alisha’s thoughtfulness, keen eye, and attention to detail. It’s been a real privilege to edit this newsletter while she’s snuggling with Lily and the new baby. Quick intro: I’m Elise — a journalist, podcaster, and lately, a fledgling filmmaker. I live in Los Angeles with my three daughters (ages 9, 10 and 13), my partner Rob, our golden retriever Oscar, tuxedo cat Abe, and hermit crab Cece. You might know my voice from NPR, or from the podcasts TED Talks Daily, Raising Us, Forever35 and/or The Epstein Files Book Club. I’m also currently co-directing a documentary, WINDSWEPT, about teens displaced by LA’s wildfires. My passion is collecting new friends and deepening my existing relationships by hanging out IRL. When COVID shut down the world and all “non-essential activities,” I thought to myself — there go all my hobbies! Below, I’m taking on questions we often pepper our contributors with, in hopes you’ll discover something you might enjoy. My 3 Good Things1. FurikakeFurikake, the Japanese rice seasoning, can be put on everything. I like the Nomi Komi brand, which is slightly sweet and tastes delicious on salmon. And my daughter Luna prefers the simple Doraemon character branded furikake, which I use on her avocado toast or avocado bagels for breakfast. Pantry MVP.
