When I was a child, my parents loved to fish. They’d wade in the Little Buffalo River in Tennessee, and I’d stick to the shore, playing with the crickets or minnows they’d purchased for bait. I was never good at being patient, despite having the coveted 1988 Zebco Snoopy fishing pole. I talk to my therapy clients about a different kind of fishing. Many are at midlife like myself, frustrated with the modern isolation that work and child-raising encourages. “Do you spend much time with your friends?” they ask each other in passing, relieved when they get a reciprocal, “not really.” They tell themselves it starts to get better around 47, referring to the researched dip in mid-life happiness...
