The basic premise is that a woman named Gail and her fiancé Tom have a conversation about their “celebrity sex passes”—the celebrities for whom they can claim a monogamy exemption. In a surprise twist, her fiancé actually ends up sleeping with his chosen celebrity and Gail decides the only way to fix the situation is to use her hall pass and have sex with Jon Hamm, who is actually in the movie, along with a bunch of other Mad Men cast members. I will see this movie! My hot take on the aforementioned passes—aside from how they reflect the frequent mood of captivity within hetero monogamy culture—is that sex with a favorite celebrity would probably be pretty bad for many reasons, the least of which is the often disappointing collision of fantasy and reality. Speaking of movies and monogamy: The Invite—about a sexually charged dinner between two neighbor couples—is finally out and I agree with Angelica Jade Bastién below. I saw a preview months ago but have thought about it often ever since. I hate more movies than I like, and I loved this one.
As I wrote after seeing it, The Invite is “riveting and hilarious and delightful,” but “sexy and intoxicating, too—simply because of the charge of four people actually speaking aloud what is supposed to remain unspoken, both within monogamous couples and between couples.” The Trouble with SexI’m on The Trouble with Sex Podcast with Dr. Tammy Nelson talking about my book, My Mother’s Daughter, but also: living our parents’ unlived lives, inherited shame, and more. She asked me what I thought the biggest “trouble with sex” was today and you will not be surprised by my answer: shame. We get into it in the episode. Lemme get you unstuckI’m almost fully booked with private writing clients for July—just one more spot left—but I’m also officially booking for August. I just got a new client testimonial from Joanne Bagshaw, author of The Feminist Handbook, who is working on a beautiful memoir:
Also, Laura McKowen—author of the bestselling We Are The Luckiest and a recent client—has a piece on how to get unstuck in the writing process and… I am one of her tips! So, if you’re working on a memoir or non-fiction manuscript—whether you’re in the early idea phase or wrangling a draft—lemme help get you unstuck. You can find more about working one-on-one with me here or just reply to this email to get the full rundown. Gen Z’s wannabe Phyllis SchlaflyThe New York Times profiles Emma Waters, a young woman who works for the Heritage Foundation on “policy related to reproductive technology and the family.” Here’s an excerpt:
Waters has been featured in social media videos from the Heritage Foundation where, as I put it in my recent essay in Cosmopolitan, they attempt “to reframe early marriage and motherhood as a common sense middle ground between the ‘girl boss’ and the ‘tradwife.’ You can fast-track a family and then build a career later, they swear.” We also broke down Waters’ whole schtick in an episode of Dire Straights. Splashy Times profile aside, Jessica Valenti points out that while Waters is clearly being promoted by the right-wing as the “Gen Z Phyllis Schlafly,” she isn’t exactly taking off:...
