Hello! I want to apologize to those of you on this mailing list who got my Zoom link for the Artists for Action & Truth meeting yesterday. I was setting it up on my phone and didn’t choose the right account. (Having two Substacks’ can be confusing!) Artists for Action & Truth is a group that began when Kamala announced she was running. It has now become a once a month ‘support’ group where we talk about how to stay grounded and sane in the midst of all the chaos in our country and the world. My old friend and (spiritual) coach, Mairead M O'Connor, joins us as well, offering her intuitive (and very helpful) guidance. So it’s not really an ‘action’ group but more of a how do I put on my own oxygen mask so I can be helpful and involved from a grounded place. Vital Voices Portraits!I’m so excited to share the final portraits that I painted for Vital Voices. It was thrilling to see them in the gorgeous new Perelman Performing Arts Center for the Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards. Meeting the women I’d painted and witnessing how deeply they connected with their portraits was an incredible experience. Here are the portraits and some photos from the event!
They gave away lots of the Vital Voices book! So many of the women that I’d painted were there. Painting someone’s portrait builds a special kind of connection. The first photo is me with Ariela Suster and my amazing wingwoman Chelsea Lauren from George Rings . Super fun to take my art pals Samantha Dion Baker Mokshini and Jennifer Orkin Lewis to see it in the afternoon.
Each year, the Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards honors women leaders on the frontlines of change. Donna Langley-is a British film executive who is chairwoman of Universal Pictures and Universal Filmed Entertainment Group and Chief Content Officer Susie Wolff is a Scottish former professional racing driver and current managing director of F1 Academy. Seyi Akiwowo is a British-Nigerian women's rights activist and campaigner. Seyi Akiwowo is a British-Nigerian digital governance leader and former local politician Susan Diane Wojcicki, the former CEO of YouTube, was a powerful figure in the tech industry and an advocate for women and underrepresented groups. Tracy Chou is a tech activist and startup founder whose trailblazing tools and advocacy are making the digital world safer. Farwiza Farhan is a forest conservationist working to protect, conserve, and restore the Leuser ecosystem in Sumatra, Indonesia. Shirin Musa is a Pakistani-born Dutch politician and women's rights activist who is the founder of Femmes for Freedom NEXT SUNDAY!Jennifer and I have a fun Zoom workshop this Sunday! Wild Spring Flowers: Expressive Faces & Florals - Zoom workshop Sunday, May 3 · 1:00–3:00 PM (EST) (The Zoom link will be sent the day before class—please keep an eye on your email.) Join us as we step into the vibrant, slightly chaotic beauty of spring in full bloom! This workshop is open to all ages and ability levels—everyone is welcome. The class is donation-based. While we suggest a $40 contribution, our goal is to keep this accessible to anyone who wants to join—please pay what you can. If you’re unable to attend live, a video-only option is available so you can enjoy the workshop on your own time. After the Vital voices event I spent a few days with my grandkids. Mona and I always go to get ‘coffee’ early in the morning and to draw. When she showed up by my bed at 6:40 am saying are you almost ready to go? How can I say no? We were drawing by 7 am. I decided she was ready for a little face tutorial. :) I’d say she really got me! :) There’s still a few spots left for our Morocco retreat February 6 - 13, 2027 Hope to see some of you on Sunday! xo Gayle You're currently a free subscriber to Paint What You Love.
