Painting Bad Bunny and drawing with kids in Miami...

I don’t often paint anything very topical, but I couldn’t resist painting Bad Bunny. It was really fun to try to capture the chaos around him in a simple way. I feel like this is my mission, and our mission when I teach with Jennifer Orkin Lewis : how to simplify in a way that is fun and captures the essence of the thing, person, place, or moment.

I’m excited about our upcoming workshop this Sunday with our good friend Samantha Dion Baker. Jennifer and I will be painting from travels to Bali and Paris, and Sam will be making her own interpretation of our photos. It’s going to be such fun to see all this variety of styles and ways to handle interpreting a photo to a painting. If you can’t make it live at 1 pm EST, you can choose the video-only option. All levels and ages are welcome. We love when kids come too!

Speaking of kids…

I spent the last five days in Miami with my daughter and my granddaughters, ages 2 and 5, and some of their friends. It was amazing to be warm, be in the water, and feel the sun. Now it’s back to cold Massachusetts with almost a foot of snow coming. Sigh.

I showed Mona how to see the shapes on the ocean and waves. Sometimes we use our own sketchbooks, sometimes we used our shared sketchbook. She draws on the left, and I draw on the right. She always tells me to draw slower! “Slow down, Gigi!” She wants to copy what I am doing so she can understand it. Then she makes it her own. SUCH fun!

We drew in our sketchbooks a lot! I bought extras for Mona’s friends and in case we met any other kids - which of course we did. This boy, Emmett, was at the pool with his sketchbook and he was happy to join us. At not even 7, his drawing ability was kinda astounding. He gave me this Spider-Man drawing :)
