Happy Saturday! An agave stalk towers over and above my second-story apartment, outside the window I work by every day. The flowers have bloomed and withered, the seeds have all almost dropped, and I’m counting the days until the gardeners come to cut it down and haul it away. The agave will be no more — at least in its current form. Agave plants, sometimes called century plants, only bloom like this once in their 10–30 year lifespan; it’s called a death bloom. The plant, after a long life, expends its final energy on growing the tallest stalk it can, so its once-in-a-lifetime seeds will have the best opportunity to be pollinated and distributed back into the sandy soil below. It reminds me that even abundance is a cycle — there are seasons of wild growth, seasons of enduring, and seasons of letting go of what once was in order to create something new. So many people I know are in that final, glorious bloom before their next endeavor. This weekend, I’m thinking about what it means to emerge into that next phase, where all the seeds I’ve been planting can finally find a home in fertile ground. I hope you, too, can find the ways in which your investments, whether personal, professional, or otherwise, are contributing to the new lives that are laid out before you.
