My sister turned thirty earlier this week. I am a year and a half older than her, always a few steps ahead and confident I’m leading us in the right direction.

Truthfully, I have no idea where I’m going. There’s no map for life! And even if there was a map, it would be all but reliable: new routes showing up, others changing, and some ending abruptly in a dead end.

But this uncertainty has not stopped me from compiling a list of thirty life lessons I’ve learned in thirty (well, thirty-one) years to celebrate my sister’s entry into this new decade.

Get to know your neighbors. Yes, it’s nice to know who lives next door, but caring for each other creates such a lovely sense of community. I’m always tickled when my neighbor takes my garbage bin in after trash day or grabs my packages when I’m out of town.
Having a water bottle you like means you’ll probably drink more water. I don’t make the rules!
Your body is your home. Decorate it how you want. Treat it with care. Listen to it when it needs maintenance (or repair). It’s a lifelong lease.
Take photos, but not of everything. My camera roll has over 17,000 photos in it and I could probably delete over half.
Try shopping at consignment/thrift stores in your area before buying new stuff. Often my favorite treasures have come second-hand (and immediately have a more interesting story).
