A few years ago, I read Tracy Clark-Flory’s memoir Want Me. In it she mentions her desire for a cozy life.
This concept reminded me of the popular Danish concept ‘hygge,’ which the official website of Denmark describes as “taking time away from the daily rush…to relax and enjoy life's quieter pleasures.” While studying in Copenhagen between my junior and senior years of college, I recall feeling desperate to bring this notion back to the states with me.
But it took me a while to realize that the concept of a cozy life is much more than being burrito-ed in a blanket while basking in the dim glow of warm light.
Nor does a cozy lifestyle deny discomfort, heartbreak, devastation, outrage, or any other tough emotion. I’m sure it’s a little different for everyone, but to me a cozy life fills the space around everything else, be it work or chores or hardship. I envision coziness as the foundation beneath my feet, sturdy, but also soft, malleable.
Here are a few ways I’ve come to rely on coziness in my every day life…
Fostering a safe and loving community:
Creating a comfortable space (with an aesthetic driven by my taste rather than what’s trending):
Spending time outside, even when the weather is not optimal (there’s something about fresh air that balances out the softer indoor moments!):
Partaking in modes of exercise that I enjoy (even if it’s a little bit of “type two fun”):
Taking time to rest:
Cooking nourishing, homemade meals (for myself or for others):
Putting on a record and drawing or writing:
