| Why AFib is close to my heart |
|
Globally, it’s estimated that more than 50 million people are living with atrial fibrillation (AFib), and my grandma is one of them.
She was diagnosed with AFib many years ago. While we are very close emotionally, we live thousands of miles apart on two different continents. I still vividly remember one of the most devastating and scary moments of my life — when my grandma was hospitalized due to AFib-related complications. Thankfully, my mom (a now-retired physician) was able to be with her, offer a second opinion, and help the family navigate important decisions during a medical emergency.
I was much younger then, and while I had long been a regular consumer of health news and information, my job as a journalist didn’t always involve covering health and medical news daily. My grandma probably doesn’t even know this, but her heart health journey is the reason I started paying close attention to cardiovascular health news, medical research, and anecdotal, first-person experiences. Someone so near and dear to my heart living with such a life-altering condition is what fuels my hunger for credible, digestible, and actionable health information, and a big reason why my career journey led me to Healthline Media, where I lead our Global News Team — an incredibly talented team of journalists equally passionate about informing and empowering people on their health journeys.
In this edition of our “revamped” Daily News, I want to take a moment to share this personal story, highlight the first-person experience of a colleague who recently had his first cardiologist visit, and feature some of the latest headlines on heart health you may have missed.
Do you know someone who’s living with AFib or another heart condition? What types of heart health news or information do you find most helpful? What heart-health related questions do you have for cardiologists and medical experts? We would love to hear from you. |
