I had the pleasure of chatting with her about creating fictional families and exploring estrangement and reconciliation in a novel. What does it take for a family to begin to heal after a major shakeup? Draw Near to Me is a brilliant standalone companion to her novel Swimming With Ghosts, another banger. Meaning you can read the new book without having read the other. Now that I think about it, “standalone companion” is a great term for a well-differentiated spouse. (Hello, I’m Bob, and this is my standalone companion Deborah.) Check out my interview with Michelle, and grab yourself a copy of Draw Near to Me, which is out today! 
If you’re looking for more family systems novels, here are a few I’d pull off my shelves and hand to you. Cloudstreet by Tim Winton. A masterpiece, and the miniseries is fantastic as well. We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler. Family and chimpanzees? This book was made for Bowen theory folks. My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite. Short, wild, and brilliant. Read this if you want to feel better about your relationship with your sister. The Condition by Jennifer Haigh. I love all of Haigh’s family novels, but this one is my favorite. The Son by Phillip Meyer. Love a multi-generational Western. And no list would be complete with the greatest family saga ever: East of Eden by John Steinbeck. Do yourself a huge favor and don’t die before you’ve read it.
