Hi everyone - I hope you’re having a good summer! I’ve been drawing weekly with Chloe Briggs and Drawingisfree.org for a few months. She has been doing these free portrait sessions for years and I can’t believe I didn’t know about until recently. Now - I am hooked, and try to plan my Mondays at noon EST around it. I look at this hour as my weekly drawing class. I’m not worrying about making a good drawing or composition, I am simply practicing. And lo and behold, the more I draw the more every once in a while it actually looks a bit like the person I am drawing. Jennifer Orkin Lewis and I are hosting our own version of this, it’ll be a little different than Chloe’s, and we still stay after each session for a little bit if you have questions you’d like to ask us. 2 FREE portrait drawing session TOMORROW! Portraits are hard! I taught a workshop here at my place a few weeks ago and I had a model pose for us both days. Day 1 was face only and draw whats around you and Day 2 was face and body and whats around you. I explained that I am not the teacher for how to make an accurate portrait. Yes I can paint portraits and they can be very hard work - often assisted by Photoshop tweeking if I do not need an original painting. What I can teach very well, is how to HAVE FUN drawing and painting faces. Below is our model Christina. Does it look like her? Not enough for anyone who knows her to say - oh that’s Christina! But I know that the more I draw her the more chances they will start to look like her and honestly - my goal is really just to have fun.

We had a wonderful few days - and even an unexpected rainstorm that sent us scrambling into my studio and then Peter’s studio didn’t wreck things. It was a wonderful weekend.
