How much is your wellbeing dependent on your children’s functioning? Your spouse’s functioning? Your boss’s or your parent’s? I doubt anyone is immune to this influence, nor would they want to be. But most of us could stand to untangle ourselves a bit. How do you stay connected but separated? Invested in the other, but less anxiously so? And how do you stay interested in your own damn self? There’s a message board for parents in DC where I sometimes lurk. (Millennials are message board creatures after all. It’s our purest form.) There are some helpful conversations, but it’s mostly a way for people to get more stirred up about their children’s challenges (i.e. I’m not getting any support at my school either!) or sink into competitiveness (He’s three grades ahead in math). ...
