| | | | | Q | | Why does the menopausal transition cause bloating? What can you do to manage these effects? | | | | A | | Fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone slow the rate at which food moves through your gastrointestinal tract. Hormonal shifts also change the composition of gut bacteria. These two factors combine to result in bloating.
A decline in estrogen affects how your body regulates sodium and its water balance, which can lead to fluid retention and bloating. Lastly, menopause causes metabolic changes, including redistribution of fat to the abdominal area and a decrease in muscle mass, which can make you feel like your abdomen is bloated (but technically it's fat).
First-line treatments are lifestyle management interventions, such as balanced eating, exercise, good sleep hygiene, and stress management, along with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which have been shown to help with overall well-being during menopause.
Other interventions include diet changes, probiotics, menopausal hormonal therapy (MHT), and other medications.
A diet that limits carbohydrates (e.g., the low-FODMAP diet) and gradually increases fiber and soy intake may help support good gut bacteria. Probiotics are also helpful for the same reason. MHT can be beneficial, but some people report mild bloating as a side effect, depending on the type of therapy. Antispasmodics and secretagogues for people with irritable bowel syndrome have also been shown to help relieve menopause-related bloating.

Choose products with pH values around or within this range, or with a pH "body-similar" to yours. These selections are less likely to cause irritation, dryness, and upset the healthy bacterial balance in your vagina. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | We may feature your messages to our inbox within our content.
