Happy Saturday :) There’s an unspoken rule from my Midwestern upbringing that still lives somewhere deep in my psyche: work first, then rest. This was modeled by the women around me. They cared for their families, tended to their careers, and kept our homes and churches and communities running. There was always something to finish before they allowed themselves to slow down…if they even allowed themselves to slow down at all. And yet, once or twice a year, my mom would send my dad and the four of us kids to a nearby hotel for a couple of nights. We looked forward to these “mini trips” as my dad had virtually no rules about the pool, late-night movies, or junk food. At the time, I thought she was giving us space to bond with him, since he was often traveling or occupied with his businesses. Now I wonder if this was one way that she negotiated her own rest and reset. What a sweet lesson for me in my own adulthood. At present, I find myself in a very full season of life. Like many of us, it is easy to live in a constant state of output. There are always logistics to manage, messages to answer, groceries to order, calendars to coordinate. When I slip into hyperactivity and can’t seem to turn off the planning and doing, this is usually when I find I am farthest from myself...
