| | | Honey is the sweet, viscous product that honeybees make. Bee pollen is made up of flower pollen, nectar, and bee saliva. It's generally sold as a powder or granules you can add to foods like smoothies or oatmeal. | | Below, registered dietitian Kirsten Seele looks into the research around the health benefits of this health food store staple. | | | | | | | Bzzzz, Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik October 28, 2025 • 2.5 min read | | | | | | | | Q: | What are the benefits of eating bee pollen? | | | A: | Some say that consuming bee pollen decreases the risk of chronic diseases and cancer. However, there isn't enough substantial evidence to back up these claims or give any clear recommendations (or promises) at this time.
One animal study suggests that chronic prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) may benefit from consuming bee pollen, likely due to the anti-inflammatory properties and effects on the gut microbiota. Another study suggests that consuming bee pollen may help ease menopause symptoms. Both studies had relatively low sample sizes.
Bee pollen is slightly more nutrient-dense than honey due to its composition. Bee pollen contains a variety of antioxidants, which could help explain claims that it protects against certain chronic diseases and cancers.
The antioxidant content of bee pollen depends greatly on the flowers that the bees pollinate, and this variable could make research and recommendations more challenging.
There are a few groups that we recommend avoiding taking bee pollen, which are: - those taking warfarin, an anticoagulant
- those allergic to pollen or bees
- those who are pregnant or nursing
- children under the age of 2
