| | | I was a vegetarian for many years, during which time I came to enjoy meatless products such as Beyond and Impossible burgers. While I don't find them to taste exactly like a meat burger, they do scratch the same itch. In fact, I still eat them on occasion, even though I've reintroduced some meat back into my diet. | | As these products become more popular, so do questions about their nutritional value. Today, Kirsten Seele, a registered dietitian at Healthline, is here to give her two cents. | | | | | | | Eat up, Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik October 2, 2025 • 3 min read | | | | | | | | | | Q: | Are plant-based meat products healthy? | | | A: | Based on the existing evidence, meatless meat products (such as Beyond and Impossible Burgers) are a healthy addition to a balanced diet.
A recent review found that the nutritional quality — specifically calorie, fat, iron, and some vitamin content — of a variety of plant-based options was similar to that of lean beef.
A notable difference is that plant-based options tend to be higher in sodium (about 370 milligrams per serving). Sodium content is a common concern in ultra-processed foods, in part because it may lead to overconsumption and promote obesity. However, the review also noted that these products generally do not lead to overconsumption.
Of course, many different products are on the market these days, all of which were not included in this review. So make sure to read the ingredient list and the Nutrition Facts label, as they may vary for other products.
One common misconception about meatless meat is that because it's ultra-processed, it can carry certain health risks. However, it's important to remember that there are many types of food processing, and not all of them are negative for our health. Food processing, like pasteurizing foods, removes harmful bacteria that can make people sick. We can also enrich and fortify products with vitamins and minerals, which can increase the nutrient density.
The Impossible Burger is mainly composed of water, soy, coconut oil, sunflower oils, flavorings, salt, and food stabilizers and emulsifiers. It's also fortified with many B vitamins. The flavorings give the product a savory flavor that resembles meat, while the vitamins make it a comparable nutritional option to animal-based meat.
Overall, I'm a big fan of having options and variety in the diet, especially when the options are safe and meet nutritional needs and preferences. Whether you choose to use these products is up to you!
To increase the variety of plant-based options, you can also substitute black beans, lentils, or tofu for ground beef in vegetarian recipes. | | | | | Kirsten Seele, Registered Dietitian | | | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject?
