| | Let's play a game: Put a finger down if you use sunscreen. Put a finger down if you still get sunburned. Now, put a finger down if you've ever gotten sunburned. Did you put three fingers down? (I did. 😕) If you didn't — consider yourself lucky! I, on the other hand, am not so much. My skin is super prone to sunburn, which is why I'm choosing to focus today's newsletter on caring for sunburned skin. | | | | Stay cool 😎, Sarah Matysiak Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Sarah Matysiak August 22, 2025 • 4 min read | | | | | | |
| | | Taking the "burn" out of sunburn | I'm embarrassed to admit that I've already gotten sunburned quite a few times this year (and I'm currently recovering from one). As experts recommend, I try my best to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, but sometimes it's easy to lose track of time when I'm lounging on a beach or by a pool. It also doesn't help that my skin just seems to be prone to sunburn. | The next time you find yourself with a sunburn, here are some tips on how to manage and care for your stinging skin while it heals. | 💆🏻 For a sunburned scalp: - Avoid sulfates and dimethicones in hair products, as these can cause more irritation and trap heat.
- Hold off using heat styling products, such as blow dryers and flat irons.
- Put on a hat while outdoors (and consider always using one for extra sun protection).
| 👁️ For sunburned eyelids: - Wear sunglasses outside (and consider always wearing polarized, broad-spectrum sunglasses that wrap around your eyes for an added layer of sun protection).
- Keep your eyeballs moisturized with preservative-free artificial tears. These can help provide a cooling sensation if sunburned eyelids cause your eyes to feel dry.
- Take a break from using contact lenses, at least for a few days.
| 👄 For sunburned lips: - Use moisturizing lip balm frequently with ingredients such as aloe vera and — you guessed it — SPF of at least 30.
- Avoid petroleum-based products, like Vaseline, as these can trap heat.
- Try not to lick your lips, which can cause more irritation.
- Allow any blisters to heal naturally instead of popping them.
| 🧊 General sunburn relief strategies: - Apply a cold compress to the area, or take a cool bath or shower.
- Moisturize with a soothing, natural product, such as 100% aloe vera gel or coconut oil.
- Drink enough water to keep your body and skin hydrated.
- Consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as acetaminophen, naproxen, or aspirin.
- Use a 1% hydrocortisone cream to help relieve inflammation. Higher strengths are available by prescription, if necessary.
- Wear loose clothing that won't rub on any sensitive areas.
| Following some of these tips can help you find some relief from a stinging sunburn (which most of us know the pain of all too well). But how long it'll take to heal depends on the severity: 3 to 5 days if it's mild, 1 week if it's moderate, or up to 2 weeks if it's severe. (Keep in mind that with a severe sunburn, also called sun poisoning, you may need to seek medical attention.) | | Learn how to check your skin for melanoma through our new email series with just one click. | | | | | | Here comes the sun | | | | | Neutrogena Broad Spectrum SPF 50 for Sensitive Skin | Along with having sunburn-prone skin, I have sensitive skin, which makes finding a nonirritating sunscreen to use on my face all the more difficult. But my skin tolerates products very well from Neutrogena's sunscreen line, and I keep coming back to them. Plus, it's zinc-based, which means that it's reef safe! | | Every product we recommend has gone through either Healthline's or Optum Now's vetting processes.
