Thanks for being a free subscriber to Downtime! But wait, aren’t you at least a little curious what the paid people are getting? Here’s a preview of what you’re missing behind the paywall: This is the Friday recs post at Downtime, a weekly roundup of culture, books, delights, and things on my radar. You should subscribe, if you haven’t already!Morning! Last week, Downtime crossed one million views within thirty days. It felt surreal (and just a bit terrifying) to know that so many people are reading. I started writing newsletters eight years ago, and it’s always the readers and fun conversations we have here that bring me back to it. So, I wanted to say thanks for reading and sharing my rambles, however chaotic (as is the case today). And if you’re new here, welcome! —Alisha
^ same, except 80% desire to hide, 20% desire to be seen Above the paywall today: 4 easy, breezy things I loved this week, including heat-wave-appropriate recs. What’s below the paywall today: *cracks knuckles* I hope you’re ready for a potpourri of all the links and reads and rabbit holes. Including: antiquing in Provence, the most enchanting house on an island off the coast of Scotland, internet nostalgia, fashion rabbit holes, and TV shows to put on your radar. Also, I share the winner of our Galette! cookbook giveaway last week. There’s lots to read, so let’s get into it. (If your email gets cut off, you can see it on the web.) In case you missed it, Friday Recs are now just for paid subscribers. Free readers get a preview, but the full version (and all the good stuff) goes to paid subs. It’s $5/month to join—and now, these Friday posts are also completely ad-free, so it’s just you, me, and the recs. As it so happens, this month is the two-year anniversary of Downtime, so I’m running a limited-time offer on annual subscriptions to celebrate! 5 Things I’m Loving This Week 1. It’s been 90-plus degrees here in Washington, D.C., as I’m sure it’s been for much of the country, so I’ve been seeking out no-cook salads for these hot, hot days. Smitten Kitchen’s cucumber crunch salad with tofu is on my list, as is this sesame noodle salad with sticky tofu from Melissa Hemsley feelgood food. 2. I’m still blending obscene amounts of greens into pasta sauce in a futile attempt to sneak them past our toddler. This one, called hella green pasta from Caroline Chambers’s cookbook, is deliciously parmesan-forward and, to my adult palate, a triumph. Alas, it was firmly rejected in favor of plain noodles topped with fistfuls of parmesan (freshly grated only, or else).
3. I’ve been trying to shop “more like a collector, rather than a buyer,”¹ paying attention to fabric, cut, construction, and not just the thrill of “new.” (Which, yes, often means spending a bit more per piece.) Using said method, I’ve assembled a collection of summer dresses that genuinely delight me—enough that this year, I found myself pulling old favorites from the closet rather than hunting down something new. Revisiting these dresses made me feel content, and inspired me to close the 17 tabs I had open with ¡exciting new! summer frocks. I already own some very good ones. A great reminder to shop your own closet.
Other past-season favorites in my closet include: a raw silk dress from Jenni Kayne, a billowy Regency-style-bodice² dress from J.Crew (no longer sold, but this one is similarly cut), a simple side-tie dress from Sézane, and my absolute favorite of all time, a mini dress from Doen made from ramie, which they no longer sell, but you may be able to score secondhand. This one’s quite similar, from the current season. 4. Speaking of summer wardrobes, pretty swimsuits with lots and lots of smocking are calling to me. I was kindly sent this one-piece from Boden, and the colors are so vibrant. Since deciding I’m probably a “Bright Spring” (iykyk—a rabbit hole I dove into with zero regret), I’ve been gravitating toward bolder, juicier shades, and Boden nails the brief. (I am eating my words from a few months ago, declaring that the brand is not for me.) And while we’re on the subject of swimsuits: I’m into this Left on Friday x Loeffler Randall collab, two indie brands I love. (LOF suits somehow feel like butter, but are just compressive enough.) 5. I tried a food influencer’s new brand of condiments, and I have some thoughts…...
