Here’s how to start turning new places into short-term homes.
I do believe that we can all design a way of living and working that feels more playful, inspiring, and expansive — starting with how we approach the everyday. This morning, while lying awake, feeding my 3-month old in our cute rooftop Airbnb studio on Isola d‘Elba (Italy), where we’re currently for a 5 day mini vacation, I had to think about how grateful I am that we are continuing to live our lives in the way that aligns with our values, spending time exploring new places. When it comes to travel, Field Trips are the version where you get the spirit of travel—novelty—into your day without actually leaving your home town, but just exploring a new place within (or just around) it. The bigger sister of Field Trips are mini vacations, and the even older sister are couple-of-week-long trips where you turn a place into your home for a few weeks or even months. The latter is how I’ve spent the last couple of years and turned it into my lifestyle. How I got there It started with small tweaks, and over time, became my way of living. At some point — around the time I became self-employed — I started stretching trips out. Combining them with a conference visit. Visiting friends. Bringing my laptop and working from cafes with decent WiFi. With that, I started turning stays into the kind of trip where you can start the day with a croissant and a long walk, take a midday swim or yoga class, and still find time to send a few emails before heading out for aperitivo or an afternoon hike. And then during the early days of Covid, where my husbands job became a little more remote friendly as well, we would escape NYC for nearby nature — Cape Cod, Montauk, national parks — working a few days, slowing down our routines, savoring moments like long lunches on the beach or early evening hikes. Eventually, we let go of our apartment entirely and spent longer stretches (typically 1-3 months at a time) in places we loved: months in LA, weeks in Oaxaca and Mexico City, Barcelona, Cape Town, Tuscany — blending work, life, and travel. Each day held room for play, exploration, and local routines. Mornings at Saint Bakery, afternoons writing from a sunlit courtyard, spontaneous yoga classes or museum visits. Two years later, we decided we wanted a base again and moved to London, where we signed a lease again. While this was our base, we kept spending time in Barcelona, the Canary Islands, Tuscany and Austria, subletting or swapping our apartment to avoid double rent, and subletting a place from a friend or local while they were traveling. The shift wasn’t just about extending time — it was also about presence. To notice the summery breeze in a new city. The joy of stumbling into a bakery and picking out a pastry without knowing the name. The magic of flipping through magazines at a book art fair you stumbled into. The simple magic of eavesdropping on strangers in a café and imagining their stories. And it turns out, I noticed I don’t see this lifestyle as an escape from work, but a reinvention of it. When I’m in a new environment, I work faster and more efficiently. I move with more curiosity. I take real breaks, not just scrolling ones. I get inspired. And perhaps most importantly, I get to imagine new ways of living.
