Bookmarked: Carley FortuneRomance, lakes, and feelings galore: the NYT bestselling author shares her writing process for One Golden Summer, plus her perfect reading day and favorite Toronto picks.
Welcome back to Bookmarked, a recurring column here at Downtime where I chat with authors and bookish people I admire about their favorite reads, creative rituals, and more. Today’s installment is a juicy one—and a little on the longer side—so feel free to click the title above to read it in full on the web. x I’m so excited to share this conversation with author Carley Fortune—dare I say one of today’s most beloved voices in contemporary romance. If you’re new to her work, prepare to be swept away: her novels are lush, emotionally layered, and rooted in unforgettable lakefront settings that practically shimmer off the page. What keeps readers coming back (myself included) is the way she writes love stories that feel real—full of longing, nostalgia, and beautifully messy characters. Carley’s latest novel, One Golden Summer, unsurprisingly landed on the New York Times bestseller list after its release earlier this month. In the midst of book promo craziness, she generously welcomed us into her home for a quick photoshoot and a candid chat about her creative process, motherhood, book-to-film adaptations, Toronto recs, and what she’s reading right now. I hope you enjoy our interview as much as I did! Get to know Carley Fortune, author of One Golden SummerHi, Carley! For readers who might be new to the wonderful Fortune-verse, could you please give us a brief teaser for your latest book, One Golden Summer?
Your second book, Meet Me at the Lake, is being adapted into a movie (with Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry, no less!). What’s that process been like so far? How do you land on how involved—or not involved—an author will be in the adaptation of their work?
What part of the adaptation are you most excited to see come to life on screen?
What was it like transitioning from a highly structured, managerial environment [Note: Carley was the head of Refinery29 Canada] to one that’s highly unstructured, creative, with no managers at all? That must have been a massive shift for you.
You’ve spoken vulnerably in the past about your motherhood journey—the demands of your job, your experience with postpartum anxiety and OCD, and being a creative and a mother. As a new-ish mom who also works in the creative field, I’d love your best advice on how to make it all work without burning out. It’s so hard!
What do you do in moments of self-doubt, or when you’re feeling stuck?
Who/what are your biggest literary influences? I’ve read that Anne of Green Gables is one. Any others?
What, to you, makes a really good romance novel vs. a just-okay one?
And because this is Downtime: anything you’re loving that you’d recommend?

Bonus Round! Questions from Downtime ReadersThanks to everyone who sent in questions via the subscriber chat! I passed along a few favorites to Carley—here’s what she had to say. When working through your writing, do you normally start with the love story, the setting, or maybe even a specific scene? —Melissa K.
Is there a romance trope you haven’t written yet but really want to try next? —Jess T.
Your love stories always feel like they’re about more than just the central couple—do you remember a turning point when you decided to build richer worlds with family and community at the heart? —Claire F.
Thank you so much, Carley!! Don’t forget to grab your copy of One Golden Summer, out now. Let’s chat: What makes a reeeeally good romance novel for you? The characters, the setting, or a trope you’ll never get tired of? For me, it’s usually the normal person/famous person trope that gets me, as it feels like the ultimate far-fetched fantasy…! MORE 📕 READS FROM DOWNTIME P.S.
