Hello! I’m happy to say that enough of you wrote me interested in an August workshop at my place, so it’s happening! I decided that this one will have a bit more of a…not sure what to call it, ‘magical’? theme. Something like the paintings below created for one of our Paint with G & J Zoom workshops, taking certain elements and combining them how ever you want! I’ve begun to explore these ‘magical’ ideas in my Mona & June sketchbooks. Often adding June into a photo so she doesn’t feel left out later when she’s old enough to look at them! And sometimes adding Charlie because I know Mona especially loves the pages with him in them. Someone wrote me on Instagram from a post where I wrote that my parents gave me the pearl necklace when I was born and she asked to hear the story of my pearls. First - the gold necklaces! I’m so fortunate to work with the wonderful sisters Jade and Chelsea at George Rings! Their jewelry is incredible. They came to my workshop last summer and after it was over we brainstormed and took some photos. Even Peter got to wear some rings! I’m wearing two of their gold necklaces and I never take them off. When I want a bit more ‘fanciness’, like for the New Yorker event last week, I add the pearls my parents bought for me when I was born on Okinawa. Dad was in the army and they spent two years there. Both my brother and I were born there. Below are a few pieces created from photos during those two years. My grandfather was a bigwig at Coca Cola, that’s why the bottle of Coke in this drawing of mom with other things like our Mynah bird Max, black bottom cupcakes that were my favorite dessert that she made, and red glass pudding cups. I made this drawing for the cover of a little personal book of mom’s recipes called Sweet Memories. Back to the pearls. I’ve had these pearls for 65 years! Last summer my grand daughter June pulled them and they broke. Luckily they were knotted so no pearls were lost. I had them restrung and now they should lasts forever! And that’s the story of the pearls :) I posted this painting of Amanda Gorman on IG on Inauguration day. It’s gotten quite a lot of juice, possible more than any other post- ever? My guess is these words are really resonating with people right now. I painted her from a screenshot that I took during her epic inauguration poetry reading. I will donate to Vital Voices from sales of the print. I’d met Amanda a few years before, to paint her for Vital Voices. (See my story below) Alyse Nelson, VV founder and CEO paired me with Amanda and later chose her portrait for the cover of the book. The book is amazing, if you’d like to get one, make a donation to Vital Voices HERE Speaking of social media. Please find me over at Bluesky. A lot of friends are on there now and what the heck. I’m trying it out. As always - I love hearing from you. And honestly, I really mean it! Your emails often make my day :) xo Gayle You're currently a free subscriber to Gayle Kabaker's substack.
