OCD Awareness Week

This week is OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) Awareness Week.

It is common to have some unwanted or intrusive thoughts once in a while. Most of the time, we can brush them off and move on. However, some people are more prone to experiencing a persistent pattern of unwanted thoughts (obsessions) that can cause significant anxiety, accompanied by behaviours and/or mental rituals (compulsions) to reduce that anxiety.

OCD can be treated and a great first step is to see your doctor. People experiencing intrusive thoughts are also welcome to call our free 24/7 national 0800 Anxiety Helpline (0800 269 438) for a chat about OCD and to learn some helpful techniques.

In this article, Anxiety NZ Community Education Intern interviewed a friend with OCD to share their experience. "I had no idea about OCD or anxiety until my late teens. It just was not talked about." This OCD awareness week we encourage you to learn more about it.

The more we know, the more we can help those around us.

ADHD Awareness Month

October is ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) Awareness Month. ADHD affects about 1 in 20 people, though many may not yet have a diagnosis.

It's a natural variation in how the brain processes attention, emotions, and behaviours. People with ADHD might experience things like restlessness, impulsivity, or difficulty maintaining focus on less engaging things, but these traits are simply part of their unique way of interacting with the world.

The theme for ADHD Awareness Month 2024 is 'Awareness is Key'—a vital message. By raising awareness, we foster greater understanding and acceptance. When we truly understand ADHD, we can better support those who experience it, recognizing the strengths and challenges that come with it. Find a heap of resources for awareness month here.
