Over eight breezy episodes designed to fit into your summer vacation, reporters from Planet Money – the delightfully snackable podcast that breaks down big economic ideas through friendly, funny storytelling – make up the faculty of our annual summer school. This year, we’re going to sort out the origin stories behind our economic world: from the dawn of printed money, to the invention of the federal reserve, to what stocks and bonds actually are. Pay close attention –  at the end of the series, you’ll have a chance to earn your very own diploma-like certificate of completion, suitable for printing, uploading to LinkedIn and sticking on your mom’s fridge. On the syllabus this summer? An economic history of the world, with a few gaps. Yep, we’ll be traveling back in time to sort out the truth about Earth’s greatest – most powerful, most awful, most influential – invention: money. The man-made substance meant to make the world a better place. The destroyer of civilizations. The agent of global success and catastrophe. The thing that bought you lunch. We’re rewinding the clock to figure out how mankind’s wildest innovation really came to be. In this year’s course, we’ll travel to a tiny island in Micronesia to get to the bottom of the question: what is money? We’ll take up arms at an English factory to rage against the industrial revolution. We’ll visit a bridge in Amsterdam to see the first stock trade. We’ll meet the oldest living bond and ask, what problem was finance invented to solve? Finally, with newfound clarity from the origin stories of our economic world, we’ll step confidently into our own economic realities in 2024.
