A print of the painting of the women in the ocean above ( click here to see it in my shop) was recently purchased by a man to give to his wife as she was in the last stages of dying. He knew she would love looking at it from her bed. He asked me to write a special message to her on it as well. I was incredibly moved by this and grateful to be reminded that sometimes what I paint can be healing, soothing, or simply just make someone happy when they look at it.

I’m excited to be preparing to teach a workshop at my place this weekend. As I am planning what we will do, I realize that keeping our students more process oriented on our last painting retreat with me and Jennifer Orkin Lewis really affected my OWN process a lot. I’ve been keeping my palettes more limited. ( more than usual:) I’ve been doing way more studies where I try not to care how they look but I am simply making marks and observing.

I spent a day with my NYC artist friend Mokshini - at our local lake drawing during the heat wave. I kept it super simple - only using three colors with my fave new brush pen by Kuretake - the art and graphic twin. Mokshini was with the group of artist friends that I spent an inspiring week with in Oaxaca last winter. Of course - I painted her!

We really have a good time with our Patreon. Jennifer and I are very grateful to have created a wonderful community of (all women) artists. Twice a month we hang out and paint and chat for an hour on Zoom with our Opera Pink level patrons ( $12 a month) This coming Thursday, June 27th at Noon EST we’re going to draw the wonderful model Catarina on Zoom. ( I wrote about meeting her in Lisbon in my last newsletter) We will show how we simplify drawing a figure - keeping our theme of drawing the essence of what we see, but not exactly what we see. Diane von Furstenburg - Woman in Charge

I was excited to see this great new documentary film about Diane von Furstenburg that just came out on Hulu. It’s really good - I hope you watch it. WHAT a life she’s had! I painted her and the director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy for Vital Voices - and also some of the women who are in the film! All for the book - Vital Voice: 100 Women Using Their Power to Empower.
