Imagine that a day of your life was a movie. And as the credits roll on this Christopher Nolan length feature, you see the names of all the people who influenced your functioning. Some of their involvement in your life was driven by fear or worry. And others were able to relate to you more thoughtfully. People often play a part in the immaturity they see in others. Aren’t people in charge of themselves though? Absolutely. But denying the influence of the relationship system on a person’s functioning is akin to claiming that our functioning isn’t impacted by the weather, or the amount of sleep we’ve gotten. So let me give you a couple examples of how people can contribute to each other’s immaturity and the development of symptoms, in a spouse, a child, or even a coworker.
