Who do you think will perform better on a test: people who feel anxious, or people who don’t? It depends on what they do with the anxiety.
In one study, researchers instructed a group of GRE test takers to think of their arousal as helpful, as their body’s way of getting to do something difficult. An fMRI scan revealed that more mental resources were directed towards solving problems, resources that were typically eaten up by the anxiety. They scored much higher than the control group.
These test takers didn’t do better because they calmed down. They thought differently about what was happening in their body.This is sometimes called reappraisal.
So can people use reappraisal in their relationships? I think so. ...
