There is a certain amount of stuck-togetherness in any parent/child relationship. Where are you functioning for the child, feeling for the child, and thinking for a child, when you don’t necessarily have to be? So much of a parent’s help is about managing their own sensitivity. Whether your child is four or forty, it’s useful to pay attention when you’re treating them as an extension of yourself, rather than an individual who is growing and learning to solve problems.
