It can take a lot of trial and error.

| | Q | | How did you work with a doctor to find the right antidepressant? | | | A | | "I went through the process of figuring out the right antidepressant for me during COVID, so I mostly checked in with my primary care doctor over video to talk about symptoms, dosage, etc. I tried three different types of SSRIs before finding one that worked for me, and then had to adjust to find the dosage that worked. It was a long process, and it was tough going through some rough side effects on the first few that I tried. I was glad I had my therapist to lean on during that time as well.
I knew it might take a while to find the right one, though, as there are many people in my family who take SSRIs, and they're all taking something different. But I did end up taking the same one as an immediate family member, just a different dose." — Naomi Wilde, engagement editor
"I started with a psychiatrist and felt like he ignored all my concerns. So, I switched to a psychiatric nurse practitioner instead, who was amazing! She listened to all my concerns and talked me through all my options, including pricing and side effects. We then chose a medication together.
When I had horrible vertigo as a side effect, she responded quickly to my message. We met again to discuss other options. Some simply did nothing positive or negative. I'm on my fifth or sixth antidepressant. But this one is allowing my personality to come out and let me be me again.
I will add that I'm on both an SSRI and an antipsychotic. Together is what helps my depression the most! I've also tried an NDRI, which is what gave me vertigo." — Ren Dias, editor
"Establishing consistent care is so important! I've been with the same nurse practitioner for about 12 years because she takes the time to truly listen to what I'm experiencing. I tried several antidepressants and dosages before landing on one that has worked. When increasing the dosage still left me irritable and anxious (amongst other side effects), she determined it wasn't a good fit for me. The next one was it." — Heidi Smith, coaching operations manager
"My primary care doctor initially prescribed my first SSRI for me. Later on, I started seeing a psychiatrist, whom I've now been meeting with for about 5 years. I was lucky to find an SSRI that works for me and didn't have to switch around.
What I did encounter was some difficulty with the dosage. For a long time, I took 100 mg daily. Then, I noticed that I was experiencing blunted emotions (trouble crying, feeling less happiness and less sadness, kind of being stuck in the 'middle' and not having a range of emotions). First, we added an SNRI to help. But it made my anxiety spike, so we removed it from my regimen. Then my psychiatrist helped me lower my dose to 75 mg, and after several months, I started feeling a lot more like myself.
My psychiatrist explained to me that sometimes folks need multiple medications to get their brain chemistry settled, which helped me accept taking these meds." — Christy Snyder, editor | | | | | | | Responses have been edited for clarity.
