I’ve been doing some deep thinking about what I want this little corner of the internet to be. And I’ve landed on something very close to my heart: archives. Now, when I say archives, I don’t just mean dusty folders in a library basement (though those are delightful in their own way). I mean your archives — the notes you scribble in journals, the playlists you make, the voice memos on your phone, the photos that capture a season of your life. The things you collect that quietly tell the story of who you are. As a historian, I know how painful it can be to want to tell a story and not have the records to do it. That’s why this newsletter will now be dedicated to helping us create and nurture our own archives — digital, analog, and physical — so that we don’t lose the brilliance we’re living right now. This will be our shared hub for thinking about memory, legacy, and history-making in real time. We’re living in a time where history is under attack, truth is optional, and governments refuse to disclose files. In the age of AI, protecting your intellectual property is so crucial. Not everything belongs on the internet; some things you should just keep for yourself, and those you want to access your archives later down the line. And because traditions matter in communities like ours… 📚 What I’m Reading: Right now, I’m meditating on Dark Days by James Baldwin! Here’s a quote that has stuck with me: The irreducible price of learning is realizing that you do not know. One may go further and point out - as any scientist, or artist, will tell you - that the more you learn, the less you know; but that means that you have begun to accept, and are even able to rejoice in, the relentless conundrum of your life. Your Turn ✨: Hit reply and tell me what you’re reading right now. It could be a novel, a textbook, or even your grandmother’s old recipe cards. I’d love to feature some of your reading recs in the next issue! Thank you for being here, for caring about memory, and for helping me keep this tradition alive. Together, we’re making sure our stories won’t be forgotten.
