Glow in the dark? The potential health perks of spending time outside at night
Try to recall a time when you went outside at night and looked up at the sky. What did you feel in that moment? Connectedness? Awe? If so, you might be on your way to reaping some physical and mental health benefits.
According to a 2022 research review, experiencing emotions like awe can improve emotional, social, and psychological well-being or decrease feelings of anxiety, stress, and depression.
A 2024 study developed a Night Sky Connected Index (NSCI) to measure people's connection to the night sky. One of the many findings was that a higher NSCI score is associated with greater (self-reported) scores of mental well-being and happiness.
Another study suggests that nature connectedness, or the relationship you hold with the natural world, may help predict overall well-being. This may be because nature activities — in light or darkness — can be a form of ecotherapy.
Want to reap these potential benefits? Here are some ways to enjoy the great outdoors at night:
  • stargazing
  • going for a walk on a beach
  • hiking in the moonlight
  • lighting a bonfire
  • camping
  • sitting in your backyard
Remember: Safety is key. For example, if you plan to take a nighttime stroll, bring a flashlight and wear reflective clothing so others can see you. If you want to start a campfire, make sure you're familiar with any city, town, or park regulations. Bringing a loved one with you can also help you stay safe!
