5 Good Things: Savoring the End of SummerNotes on sweet things, art finds, and the things they do in Denmark. This is Recs #102
This is the Friday recs post at Downtime, a weekly roundup of culture, books, delights, and things on my radar for my paying readers. You should subscribe, if you haven’t already! Today’s email is long and will cut off; see the full version on the web.Hi readers, This week was all about resets for me. Tiny ones at home (like decluttering the playroom - very badly needed - while listening to a whimsical audiobook) and bigger ones in prep for the months ahead (picture me standing in front of my walls staring at white paint swatches for our bedrooms, trying to tell them all apart!!). Though it’s still summer, I’m starting my list of fall resets I want to take on, like trying on all the sweaters in my closet, editing down my shoe collection, storing Lily’s clothes she’s outgrown, planning a trip or two for the fall/winter… the list in my brain goes on and on, but this will all have to wait as I remind myself to hold onto summer for just a bit longer. ![]() Savoring the last bits of summer: walking to the farmers' market (left) and lounging by the pool in that Etsy sarong I linked a few weeks ago (right). Speaking of resets: we’re headed to Nantucket this weekend for our sole summer trip! This will be our second summer there. There’s something so underrated about returning to a place you already know. The pressure to “see it all” falls away, and you can actually relax because you already know the routine. Although we now have a toddler rather than an infant, so, uh, we’ll see how “the routine” actually goes. (Any traveling-with-a-toddler tips are welcome, especially for the plane ride.) Are you an adventurous traveler or a “let’s go back to that comfortable place we already know” traveler? On that note, I’ll be OOO next and there won’t be a newsletter next Friday, but I’ll be sure to return with lots and lots of recs for you. In the meantime, why don’t you dive into the archives and catch up on anything you’ve missed, like this round-up of summer reading recs (because it’s still summer!)? While I’m excited to unplug and relax, I’m also looking forward to feeling all the back-to-school vibes upon our return… Even if you’re not a parent, the vibe shift of back-to-school is so real. Shiny new notebooks! Fall fashion! Closet and home refreshes! How are you making the most of these last few weeks of summer - or are you already entirely in back-to-school mode? —Alisha P.S. Reminder: today is the final day to vote in our fall book club poll!* Here’s the announcement about the relaunch of the Downtime Book Club, ICYMI. The vote is sooo close, so be sure to weigh in. (*best viewed in a new incognito window on your laptop) P.P.S. Parents, I’d love your recs for playroom organization and storage. Is it a good idea to buy a Montessori-esque shelf system like this one? Or will she outgrow it by the time she’s 3?? To celebrate the book club, I’m offering 20% off Downtime subscriptions. It’s the perfect time to join if you’ve been curious. I try to keep shopping roundups out of these Friday notes, but there are a couple of good sales this weekend that felt worth noting:
5 good things from the week… 1 // Fish prints. I love poking around accessible online art collections like Uprise Art or Tappan Collective, just to see what’s new. These fish prints by artist Brittany Ferns caught my eye this week. I’m thinking of buying two in the small size as a diptych for a big blank wall in our kitchen… 2 // A simple grill-friendly meal I loved. Plus, a dressing worth bookmarking. The photo doesn’t do it justice, but this dinner was so good:
(I credit this meal to a screenshot I took of a similar meal from Ella Henry!) 3 // Farmers market strolls and peak season produce. This is going to sound like a “duh” good thing, but…have you ever had plums at their peak season? Specifically, from the farmers’ market? I bought the most gorgeous Ruby Red Plums from our local farmers’ market, and holy wow, they were so sweet and only lasted a few days in our household. It had been a while since we visited the farmers’ market, and it made me regret missing the previous weeks of peak summer produce. I guess the takeaway is: TRY A PLUM before summer is over! ![]() Something that always sparks joy: the flower stand.
4 // Jeans for fall (available in petite, too) I realized I don’t own any dark wash jeans, so I just got this pair from Madewell for the fall (not on sale, sadly). I’m not sure what “balloon jeans” means, but my guess is they’re a less exaggerated version of a barrel leg jean. I’ll report back on how they fit. 5 // Two new beauty favorites I’ve used Fur’s oil before (the brand specializes in pubic hair hair - cool!), but it’s been a few years since I’ve tried their products. They’ve since expanded their line into actually functional skincare solutions, like this Flash Repair Serum that I slather on after waxing or shaving. My skin is sensitive, and it seems to really like this stuff for toning down any redness or irritation. Extra Recs & Links For my paid subscribers, I’m putting a few bonus things behind the paywall this week, including a delightful read about Denmark that got me thinking, the book I just finished and what I’m reading next, the quirky-but-so-good movie my friends and I can’t stop raving about, and an app to help you focus…...
