| Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can cause many symptoms, including fever, fatigue, rashes, body aches, and confusion. While there's no known cure for lupus, lifestyle changes and medications can help relieve symptoms. Today, Lindsay Mahar, a registered dietitian at Healthline, shares how your diet can play a role in managing this condition. | | | | Hope this helps! Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik July 8, 2025 • 3 min read | | | | | | Q: | I have lupus. What kind of eating pattern(s) should I follow? | | A: | There is no specific diet for lupus, but following a balanced eating pattern can help support your overall health, reduce inflammation, reduce your risk of complications such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure, and help you feel your best.
For a balanced diet, follow the My Plates guidelines and aim to include: - a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables to boost vitamin, mineral, antioxidant, and fiber intake
- whole grains, which provide fiber and B vitamins
- foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, walnuts, and ground flax, which have anti-inflammatory properties
- low fat dairy products to replenish calcium that may be depleted by certain lupus medications
- lean proteins such as poultry, fish, beans, and lentils
At the same time, it may be beneficial to limit foods that can increase your risk of inflammatory conditions like diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. These include: - foods high in saturated fat, such as fatty meats, fried foods, and butter
- refined grains, such as white bread and white pasta
- foods with added sugar, such as candy, sodas, and pastries
- salty foods, such as chips and fast food
- alcohol
Lupus is a complex condition and affects everyone differently. A diet change that works for someone else may not work for you. It may help to keep track of the foods you eat to monitor any change in symptoms and to keep an open dialogue with your doctor and dietitian. | | | Lindsay Mahar, Registered Dietitian | | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject?
