I tried ice water facials every day for a week

You may have seen videos on social media of people dunking their faces in bowls of ice water. If so, perhaps you thought, "Did I see that right?" Yes, you did.
This is called an "ice water facial" — not to be confused with facial icing, which uses ice only. While there's limited research on ice water facials, people claim that they enhance your skin's appearance and help reduce puffiness, inflammation, and oiliness.
I tried this for 1 week to see if it could improve the look of my skin. Keep reading to find out how the experience went.

Before I dive into my experience, let's talk about my setup. I used a large glass mixing bowl, around 12 inches in diameter and 6 inches deep, to hold the water and ice. I thought that crushed ice might feel sharp and unpleasant on my skin, and using filtered bottled water would be too expensive, so I used whole ice cubes and tap water. However, this part comes down to personal preference.
I did my facials first thing in the morning, which ended up being around 8 a.m. How did it feel, you ask? Submerging my head in the water was … not entirely pleasant.
Fair warning: When you put your face in the water, a little bit will enter your nose. I found this sensation particularly uncomfortable. I tried blowing air out through my nose, but the bubbling broke the surface of the water covering my face. (You may be able to avoid this by using nose plugs.)
Here's exactly how to do an ice water facial if you're interested in trying it out for yourself:
  1. Select a large, clean bowl. Ensure it's wide and deep enough to fully submerge your face.
  2. Fill the bowl with water and ice to about 3/4 full.
  3. Place your face in the water for a short amount of time. It doesn't have to be for very long — 5 seconds is fine.
  4. Gently pat your face dry with a clean towel.
  5. Discard the water and ice. (Don't drink it!)
