| Experts recommend eating at least 2 servings of fruit a day. However, around 80% of the U.S. population does not hit that goal. There are many potential reasons for this, including that they simply don't like eating fruit. Below, Lisa Valente, a registered dietitian, gives some expert tips for packing more fruit into your diet, even if you don't love it. | | | | Listen up, Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik July 22, 2025 • 3 min read | | | | | | | Q: | Is eating fruit really that important, and if yes, do you have advice on how to ease into fruit? | | A: | Eating fruit in moderation can be good for your health because of the many beneficial components, such as: - Antioxidants: Eating antioxidants may support your health on a cellular level and reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. The health benefits associated with a diet rich in plants are at least partially due to the variety of antioxidants they provide.
- Essential vitamins and minerals: These are nutrients your body does not produce enough of on its own, and therefore must be consumed through food or supplements.
- Fiber: Eating enough fiber can support gut health, help you manage your weight, and reduce the risk of developing certain chronic diseases.
That said, most of the nutrients you can find in fruit are also in vegetables. So if you happen to love vegetables and not care for fruit so much, I suggest eating a couple extra servings of vegetables a day.
If fruit is generally a no-go for you, you may have some luck by trying: - firmer fruit, like a Honeycrisp apple
- dehydrated and dried fruit (which we eat a lot of in my house), such as raisins, freeze-dried strawberries, and dried mango (just look out for added sugar if you buy them packaged)
- fruit smoothies
Otherwise, my advice would be to try different types of fruits. There are so many varieties out there, all with different textures and flavors. Consider trying ones that are new to you, and see which you enjoy! | | | Lisa Valente, Registered Dietitian | | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject?
