I tried breaking up with my phone

I immediately felt withdrawal.

In a Nutshell
As an editor who's worked in-office and remotely for the past 13 years, screens are a regular part of my daily routine. Between work, watching TV and movies, and playing video games, I never really considered how much time I was spending looking at a screen … until I noticed that I was feeling mentally drained almost every day.
So, I decided to try what I never thought I'd be able to do: a digital detox (which in my case meant taking a break from my phone). I wasn't sure how I'd manage without something to look at all the time, but I went for it anyway. Read on to get a closer look at my experience.

Here's how my 4-week digital detox went
what's got us buzzing
Here's how my 4-week digital detox went
I wanted to disconnect from the endless stream of updates and notifications that demanded my attention. So, for 4 whole weeks, I removed Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, Gmail, and other apps from my phone. No scrolling — just me, offline.
Week 1 could be summarized with one word: withdrawal.
I kept reaching for my phone out of habit, and I found myself missing Instagram's mindless scrolling and my favorite subreddits. Every time I went to grab my phone, I'd feel a sense of panic, like I was missing something important. I could feel the anxiety creeping in — like I was disconnected from the world, left out of the loop. It was brutal.
As the days went on, I started to realize just how often I used my phone without thinking. But by the end of the week, I noticed small moments of stillness. I found myself spending time reading, doing cross-stitch, and building Legos. Once I replaced my scrolling with more creative activities, I started to feel like a weight was slowly lifting. And it felt great.
I started to feel a real shift during week 2. I felt less panicked, and I wasn't constantly reaching for my phone. I revisited other hobbies I'd forgotten about, too, like journaling and cooking. Without the constant stream of distracting notifications, I had time to dive deeper into activities that actually made me feel good, not just preoccupied with nonsense.
If you feel like you're always "on" or that screens are taking over your life, I definitely recommend trying a digital detox. To find out how the rest of my experience went, read my full story below!
