Sometimes it’s good to just take a breath, look around and ask yourself, “what is working well for me right now?” Maybe it’s a new strategy (or maybe an old strategy!). Maybe some new product you’ve tried or an idea from a book you just read. Maybe it seems like nothing is working well, in which case: Relatable! I definitely go through those periods of life where it feels like everything is a struggle. 💙 I encourage you to try to find even the teeniest tiniest thing that is a bright spot—maybe something like a simple routine you’ve been following or some new self-care approach like taking breaks when needed Check out the comments on this post to seek out new inspiration and ideas
Novelty is key for motivation with ADHD, so it’s always helpful to find new things and share with each other ideas, strategies, approaches, mindsets, etc so we can inspire each other with a new approach to tackling our daily battles. Leave a comment Here are a few things that have been working for me lately: The Analog system from Ugmonk. It’s essentially just a fancy setup for using an index card to log your daily tasks, but its simplicity is really working for me. I just write down my top tasks for the day, and have them propped up so that I continue to see the last while I work. It helps that I’m writing things by hand, helping make it a bit more “real” to my brain that I’m actually committing to doing this thing! Rearranging apps on my phone. I’ve made it so there’s just a tiny bit more friction to get to my slot machine apps (aka anything with pull-to-refresh), and tried to push myself into reading more. So if I’m going to spend time on a device, I can at least spend it more productively. Accountability thread. For the past couple of weeks I’ve been posting an accountability thread in the substack chat, and it’s actually been super helpful for me! I take some time to think about what is really important to finish for the week, and that effort (plus some public accountability) makes it much more likely that I’ll actually follow through.
Stay curious, Jesse J. Anderson | | Jesse J. Anderson 6d What’s the most helpful thing you’ve learned about ADHD? For me, it’s about motivation. Neurotypicals are (primarily) motivated by: importance rewards consequences ADHDers are (primarily) motivated by: interest creativity/novelty challenge urgency | | |
